Supreme Court inquires about Google’s adherence to similar regulations in Europe

The Supreme Court questioned US tech giant Google on Monday about whether it applies the same regulations in India as it does in Europe.

The court, led by Chief Justice DY Chandrachud, asked Google to consider this and respond.

The court scheduled a hearing for January 18th regarding Google’s petition against a National Company Law Appellate Tribunal (NCLAT) ruling, which denied an interim stay on a Competition Commission of India (CCI) order that imposed a penalty of Rs 1,337 crore on Google.

Google’s lawyer, Abhishek Manu Singhvi, requested the court’s intervention, as the CCI’s extraordinary directives must be followed by January 19th.

On January 4th, the CCI denied an interim stay on an order by the competition regulator that imposed a penalty of Rs 1,337 crore on Google and ordered the company to deposit 10% of the amount.
