New Delhi: In a significant development, the Qatari Court of Appeal on Thursday commuted the death sentences of eight former Indian Navy officers, who were arrested last year in connection with the Dahra Global case. This verdict has been confirmed by the Ministry of External Affairs in a press statement. The sentences, originally death penalties, have now been revised to varying terms of imprisonment.

These former naval officers, identified as Captains Navtej Gill and Saurabh Vasisht, Commanders Purnendu Tiwari, Amit Nagpal, SK Gupta, BK Verma, Sugunakar Pakala, and sailor Ragesh, were detained in August 2022. Although the exact nature of the charges has remained undisclosed, there have been speculations of accusations related to espionage. Both Qatari and Indian authorities have not provided specific details regarding the charges.

The Ministry of External Affairs, in its statement, acknowledged the decision of Qatar's Court of Appeal to reduce the sentences but refrained from sharing further details, citing the judgement is still awaited. An anonymous source informed that the death sentences have been completely revoked and replaced with imprisonment for periods ranging from a few to several years.

The Indian government has been actively involved in this case since its onset, providing consular and legal assistance to the convicted men and their families. The Indian ambassador to Qatar, along with other officials, was present during the delivery of this latest verdict, demonstrating India's ongoing commitment to its nationals abroad.

The Ministry's statement emphasised their continuous support for the convicted individuals, assuring further engagement with Qatari authorities regarding the case. However, due to the sensitive and confidential nature of the proceedings, the Ministry refrained from making any additional comments at this stage.

The possibility of further legal action is being considered, as the Indian side, in collaboration with the legal team representing the eight men, is exploring options for an additional appeal against the imposed prison terms. The source quoted said, "This is all part of a process, and it will continue," indicating that efforts to challenge the verdict will persist.

This case has been closely followed both in India and internationally, highlighting the complexities of legal proceedings involving foreign nationals and the diplomatic efforts required in such situations. The latest development offers some relief to the families of the convicted men, although the path ahead remains challenging and uncertain.
